Christmas Kakanin
Kakanin is always present at the dining table in all the different Filipino family celebrations and all kinds of events. It has been a part of the Filipino culture to include these delicious rice desserts or snacks on all occasions, especially during Christmas and New Year, because of the meaning we have put in them.
We associate these Kakanin dishes as something that would symbolize keeping our ties close together, maintaining the relationships between family and friends healthy.
Puto Bumbong is traditionally from a special variety of heirloom sticky or glutinous rice called Pirurutong, and is usually served with desiccated coconut and butter.
Bibingka Galapong or Coconut Rice Cake is usually cooked in a clay pot, with banana leaves and top with salted egg slices that add a satisfying flavor of this Filipino dessert. Filipinos usually pair it with salabat or ginger tea or with hot chocolate.
These handknit versions of our traditional desserts/snacks are a perfect way to teach our little ones about this Filipino practice! And can be used to decorate your Christmas trees! Buy them individually or as a Misa de Gallo set :)

Knitting Expedition was begun as a way to provide supplementary income for the women of Ifugao to maintain the rice terraces. Instead of leaving the region to find better paying jobs, the income from the sales of the products allows them to stay and tend to the rice terraces that are not only an awe-inspiring legacy of their town but also of the Philippines and which has provided sustenance for generations of their families. The brand Knitting Expedition also signifies the journey of founders, Candy and Aueeie, as knitters and the distance that the hand-knit products have to travel to make it to your homes.
